Images created using a custom AI generator fed with Zabriskie’s Obstetrics for Nurses (1960), ‘prompt-generated’ by a string of words taken from Alan Turing’s essay on morphogenesis. The paper is a mathematical description of pattern emergence, a theory which has since been adapted to describe how animal and plant shapes form. The morphogenesis paper is very mathematical, however, it tells us : a) At the core of life’s wild variances, differentiation and deviation are crucial – without them, we would have no life to speak of at all and b) Although Turing’s own supposed social differences (as understood during his lifetime) – his sexuality, his messiness, his probable autism – were socially unacceptable, awkward shapes and patterns such as those he embodied are not only unavoidable, but also necessary aspects of what and who we are. This project is part of an ongoing artistic inquiry into the concept of natality.
